2023世界羽聯巡回賽連軸舉辦重量級賽事 ，上周剛剛在吉隆坡結束了超級1000級別的馬來西亞公開賽，1月17日 ，超級750的印度公開賽又在新德裏開戰 ，中國羽毛球隊原班人馬集體轉戰印度。而在當日中午進行的第一場單男首輪對陣中就爆出冷門 ，前世錦賽冠軍 、曾長期排名世界第一的日本名將桃田賢鬥以0比2負於丹麥選手格姆克 ，慘遭一輪遊。
桃田賢鬥在東京奧運會後就一直表現不佳 ，鮮有亮點。在1月初結束的全日本錦標賽男單決賽中，桃田時隔兩年再奪冠軍 ，讓喜歡他的球迷看到了昔日世界冠軍東山再起的勢頭 。但世界羽聯主辦的新年首個賽事 ，而且是最高級別的大馬公開賽 ，桃田卻選擇了放棄 ，而是直接從印度賽開始征戰 。目前他的世界排名已經降到了第16位 ，在日本隊內，他的排名位置也逐漸被新人奈良岡功大以及常山幹太等人反超 。
印度賽桃田賢鬥首輪的對手是現世界排名第21位的格姆克 ，雖然排名相距不多 ，但球迷們的印象和感覺還停留在過去 ，認為桃田能夠輕鬆取勝。然而比賽過程和結果卻不是這樣，丹麥人以21比15 、21比11比較懸殊的比分直落兩局擊敗了桃田 ，後者隻能接受一輪遊的結果 。桃田賢鬥的狀態下滑得太厲害 ，已有日本媒體在報道他會在近日選擇退役 ，不過這個消息並未得到他本人證實 。
國羽男單在吉隆坡的表現不佳 ，兩輪之後就全被淘汰 ，此次仍然是石宇奇等5人來印度參賽 ，看看他們能不能走得更遠一些 。
