葡萄牙隊在本屆歐洲杯隻踢了4場比賽就宣告出局 。杯战小組賽階段3-0橫掃匈牙利竟然是绩战仅胜唯一的勝場 ，此後葡萄牙2-4負於德國，首次2-2戰平法國 ，未进今夜被比利時1-0淘汰後，葡萄葡萄牙隊本屆歐洲杯之旅隻獲得了1勝1平2負的牙创成績 。
葡萄牙隊上一次歐洲杯僅取得1勝是最差在1984年 ，當時棗紅軍團小組賽階段擊敗羅馬尼亞 ，欧洲打平德國和西班牙 ，杯战3戰1勝2平晉級 ，绩战仅胜半決賽負於法國無緣決賽 ，首次合計4戰1勝2平1負 。
如果計算1984年的90分鍾內戰績 ，葡萄牙隊是1勝3平 ，要知道和法國隊的半決賽是加時賽輸球 。而上屆歐洲杯葡萄牙隊也是90分鍾內僅僅取得1場勝利 ，小組賽麵對冰島 、奧地利和匈牙利全部戰平 ，1/8決賽加時賽絕殺克羅地亞晉級 ，8強點球大戰力克波蘭 ，等到半決賽才2-0在90分鍾內擊敗威爾士，決賽最終加時賽1-0擊敗法國奪冠 。但同樣90分鍾內隻取得1場勝利 ，但葡萄牙隊是最終奪冠。如果計算最終賽果 ，葡萄牙是上屆歐洲杯合計完成4勝3平 。
另外本屆比賽也是葡萄牙隊史上首次歐洲杯決賽階段第一次沒有打進8強 。從1984年首次參加歐洲杯以後 ，葡萄牙隊過去7次參賽 ，都戰至8強階段 。其中1996年和2008年是1/4決賽出局；1984年 、2000年和2012年是半決賽出局 ，2004年打進決賽但丟冠，上屆歐洲杯是打進決賽最終奪冠 。
