在本屆歐洲杯的榜瑞班牙6個小組當中，兩輪比賽過後晉級形勢最為複雜的典头第當屬E組 。作為世界傳統強隊 ，名西西班牙原先在本小組中最被看好。洛伐兰出但出乎意料的克波是 ，鬥牛士軍團卻連平兩場 ，积分局先是榜瑞班牙0-0與瑞典互交白卷 ，隨後又與波蘭1-1握手言和 ，典头第拿到了2個積分排名第3 。相比之下 ，瑞典在次輪1-0小勝斯洛伐克之後 ，積分來到了4分 ，末輪對戰波蘭不管輸贏基本都可以出線 。對於波蘭來說，首輪1-2負於斯洛伐克、次輪0-1戰平西班牙之後，他們隻有與在最後一輪戰勝瑞典才有機會爭奪出線名額 。
然而 ，結局並沒有讓人感到特別意外。瑞典依靠福斯貝裏梅開二度以及克拉鬆進球3-2絕殺波蘭 ，積分拿到7分 ，鎖定小組頭名晉級淘汰賽 。西班牙雖然5-0狂勝斯洛伐克 ，但由於在此前的兩輪比賽中為自己“挖坑”太深 ，以至於無法完成超越 ，最終一共拿到了5個積分排在積分榜第二位 。如此一來 ，瑞典 、西班牙鎖定小組前兩名順利殺入16強 ，斯洛伐克積分盡管為3分 ，但在各小組第3的爭奪中處於劣勢而遺憾出局 ，而波蘭3戰1平2負積1分排名墊底也被直接淘汰 。
按照賽程安排 ，西班牙將在1/8決賽中對陣D組排名第二的克羅地亞 ，而瑞典則將對陣B、C組中成績最好的第三名的球隊 。
