事情的击裁警方起因是在上周末進行的德國國家德比 ，多特主場2-3憾負拜仁 。判遭賽後 ，重罚貝林厄姆在接受采訪時公開批評當值主裁判茨瓦耶爾 ：“在德國最重要的还介比賽中安排了一位之前操縱過比賽的裁判 ，你還能期待什麽 ？入调”
貝林厄姆的理由是比賽第77分鍾 ，茲瓦耶爾判給了拜仁一個點球 ，多特當時兩隊2-2戰平 。結果萊萬罰入點球 ，拜仁也憑借此點球最終3-2笑到了最後 。貝林厄姆此話一出 ，立即在德國足壇掀起了軒然大波 。隨即 ，德國足協立即開展調查，並最終對這位英格蘭國腳處以了40000歐元的重罰 ，並且警方還介入了調查 。
當值主裁茲瓦耶爾在賽後也對自己的判罰給予了解釋 ，“這種情況就是一個標準的點球 。我在比賽中看到了胡梅爾斯的手臂觸到了球 。我的依據是手臂是否伸展 ，而且是否會影響到球運行的軌跡。我在視頻助理裁判的幫助下做出了自己的評估 ，顯然胡梅爾斯的手臂並非自然的姿勢 ，而且離開了身體 ，還明顯改變了球的方向 ，這是一個點球 。”
而英國天空體育也對這個判罰谘詢了曾經在英超執法多年的裁判加拉赫爾，他表示：“他（胡梅爾斯）手臂向上，而且皮球擊中了手臂 ，可以判罰（點球） 。”
顯然 ，貝林厄姆的言論更多還是帶著個人的感情色彩 ，而並非從公正客觀的角度來評判主裁判的判罰 。即便當值主裁的判罰有待商榷 ，作為職業球員也無權在賽後公然指責裁判以及足協的選人安排 。年輕氣盛的貝林厄姆也為自己的“衝動”付出了代價 。
