其中在2014年世界杯以及2015年 、罗晒两次2016年美洲杯中 ，阿根廷三次殺入決賽 ，但是都與冠軍無緣 。在本屆美洲杯上，阿根廷一路過關斬將殺入決賽 ，最終在決賽中擊敗巴西贏得冠軍 ，梅西也第一次贏得了成年國家隊的冠軍榮譽 。
阿圭羅同樣參加了這次大賽 ，而在贏得冠軍後 ，他也曬出了2008年與梅西一起手舉奧運金牌的圖片 ，以及本屆美洲杯奪冠的圖片 ，並寫道 ：“這天 ，我們拿到了 。”需要指出的是 ，阿圭羅目前已經加盟了巴薩 ，而梅西與巴薩的續約也正在進行中 ，下個賽季兩人依舊有可能繼續合作 。
