6月3日 ，日本從日本傳來消息 ，足协周年日本職業足球聯盟經與日本足協溝通後 ，申办赛纪決定向亞足聯提出有關承辦本賽季亞冠聯賽淘汰賽東亞大區賽事的亚冠申請 ，以紀念日本承辦2002年世界杯賽20周年 。东亚大区
今年恰逢日本、淘汰韓國聯合承辦2002年世界杯賽20周年 。念世從5月31日開始 ，界杯兩國足壇分別舉辦相關慶祝活動 。日本韓國足協還特邀當年時任韓國隊主帥希丁克赴韓參加慶祝活動 。足协周年而日本足協也將時任日本隊主帥特魯西埃請到本國 。申办赛纪
日本足協在此基礎上 ，亚冠還計劃推出其它一係列慶祝活動 。东亚大区其中申辦亞冠聯賽淘汰賽東亞大區賽事正是淘汰其慶祝活動內容之一 。
在此之前 ，念世本賽季亞冠聯賽東亞大區小組賽已分別在馬來西亞 、越南以及泰國三國進行完畢 。不過亞足聯至今還未確認淘汰賽的比賽地點 。
受卡塔爾世界杯賽於今年11月揭幕影響 ，亞足聯已決定將亞冠東亞大區淘汰賽安排在今年8月進行，將西亞區淘汰賽安排在明年2月進行 ，最終的總決賽則將恢複主客場製 。
據了解 ，日本職業聯盟新任主席野村芳和透露，因浦和紅鑽 、橫濱水手 、神戶勝利船3支日本球隊躋身本賽季亞冠聯賽東亞大區8強，若日本能承辦淘汰賽，那麽對日本球迷觀賽 、日本俱樂部爭創佳績有有利 。因此 ，日本職業聯盟通過日本足協向亞足聯提出了辦賽申請。而 ，目前為止 ，日本足協是申辦本階段賽事的唯一亞足聯會員協會 。
