法國隊作為歐洲杯奪冠頭號熱門，冠军頂著世界杯冠軍的出局光環從F組中力壓德國和葡萄牙以頭名晉級 。但沒想到德尚帶隊爆出大冷，法国法國隊負於瑞士隊出局 ，无缘沒能複製98黃金一代的欧洲連奪世界杯和歐洲杯的神跡 。數據統計顯示 ，杯强自2010年世界杯以來，世界法國首次未能進入國際大賽的冠军8強 。

而最近3年 ，法國隊雖然有馬圖伊迪 ，烏姆蒂蒂這樣的世界杯功勳球員離隊 ，但整體實力不降反升 。後防線上金彭貝頂替了烏姆蒂蒂的位置，重返國家隊的拉比奧占據了中場主力 。而歐洲杯打響前法國隊主帥德尚主動征召本澤馬 ，法國前鋒時隔6年後重返國家隊 ，再加上姆巴佩日漸成熟，法國隊整體陣容非常強大 。
但是由於小組賽階段連續與德國隊和葡萄牙隊交手 ，再加上布達佩斯當地的高溫 ，法國隊整體消耗很大。今夜高盧雄雞開場先丟1球，雖然此後連扳3球 ，但沒有守住勝果 。鏖戰120分鍾，最終在點球大戰中出局 。
最近2屆歐洲杯 ，法國隊都有問鼎的實力 ，但高盧雄雞在2016年加時賽被埃德爾絕殺 ，今夜沒有在點球大戰中擊敗瑞士。算上2006年世界杯決賽的點球大戰告負 ，法國隊在經曆了2000年的歐洲杯加時賽金球絕殺之後，連續3次加時賽或加時賽後經曆點球大戰都成為了失敗者 。
