金球獎是埃弗由法國《隊報》旗下雜誌《法國足球》（France Football）自1956年起舉辦的授予每年度最優秀的歐洲足球運動員的獎項 ，也是拉厌世界足壇上最富盛名 、影響力最大的倦总足球獎項評選之一 。早些時候 ，把金《法國足球》公布了本年度金球獎的梅西30人候選名單 ，星光熠熠的若日大名單讓球迷們感受到了本年度金球獎競爭之激烈 。
其中 ，尼奥萊萬是去年金球獎的最大熱門人選，但《法國足球》當時宣布，由於缺乏足夠公平公正的評選條件 ，2020年的金球獎取消 ，這讓萊萬與金球獎擦肩而過 。梅西今年夏天成功帶領阿根廷贏得美洲杯冠軍 ，這也是他職業生涯首次贏得洲際冠軍 。若日尼奧則以中場核心身份帶領切爾西贏得了歐冠冠軍 ，幫助意大利贏得了歐洲杯冠軍 。相較於上述球員，C羅的集體榮譽則暗淡很多 。
曼聯名宿埃弗拉在接受采訪時談到了金球獎的爭奪 ，他說 ：“我完全不同意梅西贏得金球獎 。在我看來 ，金球獎是給坎特或者若日尼奧的，這是他們應得的 ，我不明白為什麽人們說‘若日尼奧隻是一個中場球員’ ，他已經贏得了一切 。若日尼奧在贏得歐冠冠軍、歐洲杯冠軍方麵做出了積極的成就 。我認為如果若日尼奧沒有贏得金球獎是不公平的 。我已經厭倦了把金球獎頒發給梅西 ，他去年獲得了什麽成就 ？好吧 ，美洲杯冠軍 。但在巴塞羅那 ，他做了什麽？若日尼奧去年也贏得了獎杯 ，所以對我來說他沒有贏得金球獎是不公平的 。”
值得一提的是 ，《天空體育》早些時候公布的金球獎最新賠率中 ，梅西 、萊萬和若日尼奧分別排名前三，C羅則和坎特並列第四 。
