隨著中國足協公布三級聯賽準入名單 ，新赛參加2021賽季中超聯賽的季上16支球隊敲定。依照上賽季的海德或津分組原則 ，聯賽第一階段申花基本上將與北京國安、第阶段打对调上海海港兩支強隊同分在一個小組 ，完广而引人關注的州城兩回合“上海德比”將集中在聯賽第一階段打完 。
上個賽季的门虎中超聯賽 ，16支球隊依照前一個賽季的新赛名次 ，蛇形排列分成兩個小組 。季上新賽季第一階段跟上個賽季一樣 ，海德或津仍是第阶段打对调在兩個賽區打賽會製 ，所以分組的完广原則不會有變化。按照這個原則 ，州城去掉了上賽季聯賽冠軍江蘇 ，门虎增補了滄州雄獅之後 ，新赛兩個小組的分組為 ：A組廣州隊 、山東泰山 、重慶兩江競技 、河南嵩山龍門 、天津津門虎 、深圳隊 、青島隊 、滄州雄獅；B組北京國安、上海海港、上海申花 、河北隊 、廣州城、大連人 、長春亞泰 、武漢隊。
此前傳出消息 ，職業聯盟出於保證票房的考慮，希望將三支廣東球隊安排在廣州 ，兩支上海球隊放在蘇州，因此A組的比賽很可能被安排在廣州賽區 ，而B組在蘇州賽區 ，同時不排除廣州城與天津津門虎對調小組的可能。
這就意味著在聯賽第一階段，申花就將遭遇兩支強隊北京國安和上海海港 。從最近幾年的戰績看 ，申花對陣這兩支球隊的戰績並不是很理想 。不過經過這兩個賽季的人員調整之後 ，申花的整體實力得到了有效最強 。與國安 、海港的比賽 ，正好可以檢驗申花的新陣容 。
按照計劃 ，新賽季的中超聯賽將分成3個階段 。第一階段16支球隊會雙循環打14輪比賽。第二階段各小組的前4名與另外一組後4名組成新的小組，再進行雙循環比賽 ，第一階段相遇過的球隊不再碰麵 。第三階段賽事將是第一階段兩個小組頭4名 ，以及兩個小組後4名分成新的兩個組，第一階段相遇過的球隊不再碰麵 ，剩餘球隊進行雙循環比賽 。經過三個階段的較量後 ，根據累積總分確定最終的聯賽排名 。
