本場比賽的兩支球隊 ，荷蘭小組賽順風順水 ，取美與東道主卡塔爾分在一個小組 ，国晋根廷同組對手還有厄瓜多爾與塞內加爾 ，强决赛與其他小組相比，荷蘭隊小組賽並沒有遭遇世界級的超級強隊 ，結果荷蘭隊也發揮正常，3戰2勝1平小組頭名出線！而美國隊所在的B組有豪華的英格蘭，亞洲鐵騎伊朗，還有威爾士，美國隊小組末輪1比0艱難戰勝伊朗 ，才驚險的殺入淘汰賽 ！
