英格蘭在2018年世界杯殺進四強，在本屆歐洲杯殺進決賽，而且這支英格蘭隊內的核心球員們年齡都不大，明年世界杯時正處於職業生涯的巔峰期 。穆裏尼奧稱：“別忘了 ，這支英格蘭隊已經進入了世界杯半決賽和歐洲杯決賽 。我相信人們需要以不同的眼光來看到這支英格蘭隊 ，我相信英格蘭會是（世界杯）一個強有力的競爭者 。”
而英格蘭主帥索斯蓋特也已經表態 ，自己會繼續留隊執教參加2022年世界杯 。“我想要帶球隊去卡塔爾 ，我認為我們在過去十年中取得了很大進步 。我們獲得了第四名（世界杯） 、第三名（歐國聯） 、第二名（歐洲杯） ，這和其它任何球隊都同樣出色。”
