日本男足作為第一檔球隊在12強賽抽簽中落位B組 ，世纪手主是国足中國男足所要麵對的最強對手 。千禧年以來 ，战日兩隊共有10次交手，本仅中國隊是获平4平6負 ，戰績可以用“絕望”來形容 。负已10次交鋒中有八次是遇对在東亞杯 ，兩次是世纪手主在亞洲杯 。
日本男足世界排名第23位 ，国足亞洲排名第一位 ，战日龐大的本仅留洋球員群體是他們強大的主要原因 。今年5月 ，获平日本男足公布了兩套國家隊大名單 ，负已一套用來備戰世預賽40強賽，遇对一套用來備戰六月初在國內進行的世纪手主麒麟杯賽事 ，對手是塞爾維亞和牙買加。其中的一套大名單全部由留洋球員組成，兩套名單中的留洋球員人數加起來超過30人 。這意味著 ，日本男足拿出兩套全部由留洋球員組成的首發 ，根本不是問題 。
世預賽40強賽 ，當中國男足還在計算小組出線幾率時 ，日本男足以14比0的巨大優勢狂勝蒙古 ，隨後以10比0戰勝緬甸。連續兩場創造兩位數分差，日本男足以絕對優勢鎖定小組第一 。四場比賽中 ，日本男足使用了四套不一樣的首發陣容 ，球隊實力極具深度 。
中國男足對於日本男足還是很陌生的 。2004年以後 ，兩隊再也沒有在亞洲杯以上級別的賽事中相遇 。而在東亞杯上 ，日本男足大多以效力國內聯賽的球員為主 ，不派遣留洋球員 。世預賽12強賽上 ，日本隊必然以全主力陣容出征 。
世預賽40強賽 ，中國的歸化球員的力量展露無遺 ，讓日本足球界開始擔憂日本男足的12強賽之旅 。很多網友用“毛骨悚然”來形容中國歸化球員的實力 ，原日本國腳中田英壽表示 ，“中國隊的武磊和歸化球員值得警惕 ，他們的個人能力十分出色。日本隊的整體實力稍強 ，但這樣的差距不足以保證日本隊一定能夠取勝 。”當然 ，也有不同的聲音 ，原日本國腳本田圭佑稱中國男足仍是三流球隊 ，歸化球員改變不了什麽。
對於日本男足而言 ，不利的因素是長途跋涉。他們將在9月1日主場迎戰阿曼 ，隨後要在五天時間裏趕到多哈與中國隊較量，時間略顯緊張 。同時 ，炎熱的天氣也需要他們盡快適應。
