《太陽報》透露 ，冬窗諾維奇俱樂部告知蘭帕德和迪恩-史密斯 ，没钱由於俱樂部在今年夏天花費了6000萬英鎊引援 ，因此在冬季轉會期已經拿不出引援資金。著名足球記者羅馬諾透露 ，這樣的條件無法說服蘭帕德，他認為在這種情況下自己難以扭轉球隊的困難局麵 ，並且已經退出諾維奇主帥的競爭。
在蘭帕德退出後 ，迪恩-史密斯已經成為諾維奇新主帥的首選 ，他在維拉下課一周後就有望找到新的工作 。本賽季諾維奇隻打進5球卻丟了26球 ，是英超進球最少丟球最多的球隊 ，不過目前他們距離倒數第四沃特福德隻有5分差距 ，而接下來還有27輪英超聯賽 ，這意味著迪恩-史密斯如果接手球隊，盡管挑戰很大但依然有率隊保級的希望 。
