在溫布利 ，意大利隊終於踢得“像意大利”了 。伯们
曼奇尼的熟悉球隊在過去的12連勝中證明過很多 ，例如意大利可以精彩地贏球，意大利低求意大利可以憑借進攻打法贏球 ，归最意大利可以不用總是活着好讓人提心吊膽……
然而 ，離開羅馬主場 ，王勤出現在溫布利大球場的伯们意大利 ，像是熟悉突然又回到了昔日的自己。他們踢得很痛苦 ，意大利低求贏得很艱難，归最在比賽的活着好進行中 ，意大利的王勤觀眾們已經不知不覺地回到了過去的那種思路 ，或者說對球隊的伯们要求——最低要求 ，活著，熟悉活下去就行 。
是的，勝利才是最重要的 ，哪怕是加時賽才獲得的勝利 。奧地利在第114分鍾由卡拉伊季奇破門扳回1球 ，也讓意大利人的提心吊膽維持到了比賽結束。意大利可以活著離開倫敦 ，下一站是慕尼黑 ，在那裏出戰比利時或葡萄牙 。或許在下一場比賽中 ，需要一支比今晚更好的意大利隊才能過關 ，但是這也不太重要 ，意大利足球的DNA決定了 ，如果客觀條件不夠好 ，最重要的還是 ，活下去 。

如果說上半時意大利人還在相信攻破對方球門隻是時間問題 ，到了下半時，奧地利開始加強攻勢 ，意大利不得不擔心自己被爆冷。奧地利確實有過機會 ，例如阿拉巴在禁區前沿的任意球射門，或者是阿瑙托維奇被VAR取消的進球 。奧地利隊甚至要求過1次點球判罰，但主裁判判奧地利球員越位在先 。
曼奇尼的改變來得很晚 ，他就像是有直覺比賽會進入加時，不想提前用完換人名額 。意大利的問題當然是消耗嚴重的中場 ，所以曼奇尼最先的換人發生在第67分鍾 ，洛卡特利和佩西納換下維拉蒂和巴雷拉 。一直到比賽臨近結束，小基耶薩和貝洛蒂才換下貝拉爾迪和因莫比萊 。
然而，加時賽剛剛開始 ，意大利突然全麵加速 ，5分鍾後就打破僵局。此前已經讓巴赫曼有過一次解圍的小基耶薩在禁區右側一次漂亮的處理球晃開了撲過來的萊默 ，左腳射入球門遠端 ，助攻的是斯皮納佐拉 。加時賽上半時臨近結束 ，助攻上前的阿切爾比在禁區中央爭搶皮球時倒地 ，但仍然成功地把皮球交給了佩西納 ，後者晃過奧地利後衛 ，左腳射入遠門柱內側 。
最後15分鍾的加時賽下半時是整個120分鍾裏攻防轉換節奏最快的一段時間 。格雷戈裏奇、紮比策 、紹布奮不顧身地想要威脅到意大利球門 ，第114分鍾 ，卡拉伊季奇一度利用角球將比分縮小到1比2。意大利也有過不止一次擴大比分到3比1的機會 ，但都沒有把握好 。最重要的是 ，第121分鍾 ，英國主裁判泰勒吹響了終場哨。
曼奇尼說過 ，他的意大利隊每個球員都是主力 ，這場比賽還真的依靠了這一點 。
