最終雙方在90分鍾的時間裏戰平 ，進入到點球大戰 。首先為曼城出場的福登意外罰失，雖然門將斯特芬在點球大戰中兩次撲到了皮球 ，但是未能阻止他們入網 ，鐵錘幫5個點球全部罰中 ，在曼城最後一名球員出來之前，他們就已經結束了戰鬥 。縱觀全場比賽 ，瓜迪奧拉的球隊無疑是占據優勢的一方 ，在控球率（64.3%-35.7%）和射門數（25-7）等方麵 ，藍月亮都是處於絕對優勢的一方，但是足球比賽就是這樣 。本場比賽的失利 ，也需要提醒曼城和瓜迪奧拉在世界足球難題（破解密集防守）上麵下足功夫 。
本輪聯賽杯點球大戰不敵西漢姆聯 ，也讓曼城就此無緣聯賽杯五連冠偉業 。過去的4個賽季中，藍月亮取得了聯賽杯的四連冠，他們已經在聯賽杯保持了5年不敗 。上一次曼城在聯賽杯輸球還是2016年10月份和曼聯的八分之一決賽。曼城在這4年裏的21輪聯賽杯比賽中都取得了勝利或晉級，這在曆史上僅次於利物浦於1980-1984年間所創造的連續25輪不敗的紀錄 。雖然聯賽杯失利了 ，但是曼城也不用太過懊惱 ，這樣他們可以將更多的精力放在英超和歐冠上，那裏才是各方豪強的必爭之地 。
