上半場比賽一開始，握主斯特林麵對門將的动拿一記挑射就擊中了立柱 。不過快樂男孩很快就再次獲得機會 ，下第這一次斯特林把握住了。格拉利什的邊路傳中 ，斯特林禁區後點將球輕鬆頂入空門。隨後雙方互有攻守，但是都沒有創造出特別明顯的得分機會 ，亨德森尾聲階段的進球因為越位在先被判無效 ，三獅軍團在整個下半場竟然沒有一次射門，不過這並不妨礙他們拿下勝利 。得到三分後 ，三獅軍團以2勝1平0失球的成績獲得了小組第一 ，昂首晉級十六強 。
賽後 ，詹俊老師對本場比賽發表了自己的看法。他認為 ，從索思蓋特本場比賽的首發排兵布陣來看 ，英格蘭並沒有像對陣蘇格蘭那樣猶猶豫豫，而是鐵了心爭奪小組第一 。與其不停觀望算計出線後的形勢 ，還不如直接搶奪小組第一 ，這樣在八分之一決賽中 ，三獅軍團將會坐鎮新溫布利大球場對陣F組的第二名 。不管這支球隊是誰 ，他們都可以以相當於“主隊”的身份來進行淘汰賽 ，而且任何一支球隊想在溫布利擊敗他們，都不是那麽容易的 。
