從慢鏡頭來看 ，斯特林和丹麥球員身體接觸是否達到了犯規乃至吹罰點球的程度，還是值得商榷的 。前阿森納主帥溫格就在一檔體育節目的直播中發表了自己的觀點 ，溫格說道 ：“這不是點球 ，我不理解VAR為什麽沒讓裁判回看一下 。是否判罰點球對裁判而言 ，確實是個難題 ，但是不管怎樣 ，他應該去看下確定這是不是點球 。”
而英格蘭前國腳理查茲也表達了相似的觀點 ，這位前曼城球員表示 ：“我們都是英格蘭球迷 ，但是這個點球 ，裁判應該去看VAR確定下 。我認為本屆杯賽的裁判和判罰都是相當出色的 ，不過我不明白這次的點球判罰為啥沒有被改判 。我不太清楚球迷們是否對於裁判的判罰產生影響 ，因為他們在斯特林倒地時開始喊叫 。我覺得裁判做出了錯誤的判罰 。舒梅切爾的撲救非常精彩 ，但他現在肯定很難受 。”此外 ，針對這個點球 ，國內外網友也是褒貶不一，不少人認為這個球並非點球 ，斯特林有“假摔”的嫌疑。
