在首發名單上，信也廣州隊主帥劉智宇派上吳少聰 、付出趙文哲 、粤媒陳日金 、全新鄭聖雄 、广州侯煜和淩傑等六名U23球員，队首代最大意外是轮惜與球隊磨合時間不足的蔣光太被放至替補席 ，吳少聰和李揚搭檔中衛 ，败打這也是此前球隊在熱身賽的中衛配置，韋世豪戴上隊長袖標。
開場前20分鍾 ，廣州隊防線吃緊 ，年輕隊員在與對手的身體對抗中處於下風，緊張的情緒也在隊內蔓延 。最典型的例子是右後衛趙文哲連續出現三次低級失誤 ，其鎮守的右路成為上海申花隊的主攻方向。不可否認，這是年輕人必須繳納的學費。
雖然防線屢有失誤 ，但難能可貴的是 ，廣州隊的中後場出球大多以短傳滲透為主，盲目的解圍球少之又少 ，球隊的攻防體係並未因人員嚴重流失而瓦解 。在打出幾次成功的傳導後 ，青年軍在比賽中開始找到感覺 ，傳球 、拿球越來越自信，越來越有朝氣 ，並逐漸掌握了場上的主動權 。
在傳導順暢後 ，韋世豪與楊立瑜在左右兩翼開始連線 ，淩傑在右路的突破也是虎虎生威 ，成為廣州隊最有危險的球員 。上半場 ，廣州隊控球率達到61.5% ，傳球次數235次 ，遠遠多於對手的140次 ，技術統計全麵占優 。
比賽的轉折點出現在第54分鍾 ，上海申花隊右路倒三角傳中 ，廣州隊後衛陳日金禁區內手球 ，經過視頻裁判的提示後，主裁判做出點球判罰，朱辰傑罰入製勝球 。此粒點球是陳日金背對皮球後防守動作不幹淨所致，暴露出球員欠缺防守經驗。
廣州隊在新賽季發生翻天覆地的變化 ，被外界視為降級熱門 。雖然首輪惜敗 ，但這就是年輕球員成長中必須經曆的過程 。讓人倍感欣慰的是，“小鬼當家”的廣州隊在比賽中打得有聲有色 ，年輕小將們展示了廣州足球的朝氣蓬勃 ，也讓廣州球迷對新賽季充滿期待 。
