不過隨著年齡增長 ，馬塔在曼聯的出場機會減少，本賽季他在各項賽事中隻為曼聯出場4次 ，本輪英超也依然沒有獲得出場機會 。馬塔和曼聯的合同在今年夏天到期 ，雙方仍未續約 。此前一些來自意甲 、西甲的俱樂部有意免簽馬塔 ，但馬塔目前的周薪高達17萬英鎊 ，需要大幅降薪才能加盟新球隊 。
目前馬塔已經開始學習教練課程 ，《太陽報》透露 ，如果馬塔選擇在今夏合同到期後退役 ，曼聯俱樂部願意為他提供一份教練工作 。曼聯內部的消息人士透露：“馬塔未來可以繼續為曼聯做出真正的貢獻 。他總是樂於幫助年輕球員，給管理層留下了深刻的印象 。有一種感覺 ，馬塔有朝一日可以像阿爾特塔那樣 ，從事教練或管理工作 。”
