北京時間8月15日 ，利亚據“theargus” 、国门国队“football.london”在內的膝盖多家英國多家媒體報道 ，上月底剛剛對右膝半月板進行手術治療的术后时上澳大利亞國門馬修-瑞恩（Mathew Ryan）表示 ，他將盡快複出 ，加紧以爭取趕上12強賽首場與中國隊的复出比賽 。
兩周前 ，盼首這位澳大利亞國門剛剛從海鷗隊（Seagulls）加盟皇家社會（Real Sociedad） ，战中結果當地時間7月21日皇家社會的利亚訓練課上 ，馬修-瑞恩突然受傷 ，国门国队事後診斷右膝蓋半月板脛骨外側的膝盖軟骨存在病變，並在當地時間7月26日進行了手術 。术后时上皇家社會在其官網上證實 ，加紧29歲的复出馬修-瑞恩“在脛骨外平台的軟骨中觀察到了一個病變 ，周一 ，盼首他將接受關節鏡檢查 ，由Mikel Sánchez博士在Vithas San José de Gasteiz診所進行 。”
手術完成後 ，馬修-瑞恩及時更新了個人社交媒體主頁 ，表示手術進行得很順利 ，而且術後康複也很順利 ：“最初得到的消息是術後四周才能上場，我也會錯過球隊在諾坎普球場對陣巴塞羅那的首場聯賽 ，但是我試圖更早地恢複，早一點回到球隊，到目前為止一切都還不錯 ，我希望在兩周內上場 ，為了代表澳大利亞隊參加世預賽的比賽，我有信心可以做到（上場） 。”
根據賽程安排，中國對陣澳大利亞將暫定於9月1日14點進行 ，出於種種原因，澳大利亞隊不得不放棄西悉尼體育場的主場 ，選擇西亞地區卡塔爾作為最為有可能的比賽地點 。
