Tim Murtaugh, the director of communications for President Donald Trump's re-election campaign, tried to throw shade at Democrats with a photo of Team Trump donning "Keep Iowa Great" hats as they left the state on Tuesday. It didn't exactly go as planned.
"So much winning," he tweeted, alongside the photo of the Trump allies on a plane. "Didn’t have time to pay attention, so how’d it go for the Democrats? Everything go off without a hitch?"
This was, of course, a reference to the Democrats' Iowa caucus debacle involving a faulty app and a major delay in results going public.
But Murtaugh's plan backfired. Soon enough folks online were roasting the photo, noting the vast majority of the people in the picture were white.

In fact, by about 4 p.m. ET, Ben Carson's name was trending on Twitter as people pointed out the awkward way the secretary of Housing and Urban Development kneeled in the aisle of the plane for the photo.

The officials on the plane represented a who's who of Trump world, including Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz.

Former Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill tweeted about the photo: "One of these things is not like the others. Hint: they made him squat in the aisle so he was visible."
Donald Trump Jr. fired back at McCaskill, posting: "1. Dr. Ben Carson did not have a seat in this pic because he was sitting in First Class with my family 2. Dr. Carson is not a "thing," he is a world renowned, life-saving neurosurgeon."

Later, McCaskill responded at folks on the right criticizing her original tweet.
"Ummm. Pretty sure pointing out a lack of diversity is not racist," McCaskill she wrote on Twitter. "Sorry Trump world."
