歐洲杯小組賽A組首輪威爾士和瑞士的比賽即將在巴庫打響 ，作為威爾士唯一的进球巨星和領袖，也是荒困國家隊的曆史最佳射手（33球） ，貝爾的圣贝送助表現一定程度上決定著球隊能走多遠 。已經一年半時間國家隊顆粒無收的尔还貝爾飽受質疑，但他表示長時間的年半能送球荒並不會成為自己的困擾並影響表現。
2019年10月和克羅地亞的进球比賽後 ，貝爾在長達20個月的荒困時間裏國際比賽毫無斬獲 。作為上屆歐洲杯黑馬威爾士仍在隊的圣贝送助8名球員之一 ，31歲的尔还貝爾交出的數據在媒體看來非常慘淡 ，但他本人卻並沒有對此太過憂慮 。年半能送在熱刺賽季最後階段貝爾的进球表現可以說是可圈可點 ，最後7場打進4球 ，荒困尤其最後一場對萊斯特城幾乎是圣贝送助一己之力為球隊拿到歐戰資格。
和瑞士的尔还賽前新聞發布會上貝爾表示：“對我來說這不是個問題，（即便沒有進球）我也有助攻 ，我依然對球隊有所貢獻 ，所以我毫不擔心 。當然如果有可以得分的機會，我也希望能夠抓住。我們很激動能夠來到這裏 ，我現在覺得自己身體很好 ，做好了100%代表我的國家出戰的準備 ，和我平時做的一樣 。”
威爾士主帥佩奇也對愛將予以支持 ，“（貝爾）不進球不是世界末日 ，即使他不進球 ，他也會對進球有幫助 ，這很重要，他也一直在這麽做著 。”
克羅地亞頭號球星 、皇馬中場大將 、貝爾的前隊友莫德裏奇此前接受采訪時曾表示希望自己的球隊克羅地亞能夠和貝爾的威爾士在淘汰賽相遇 ，在他看來貝爾的職業生涯的關鍵在於他是否對足球和榮譽仍然有動力和渴求 ，這不光是眼下威爾士所需要的，可能也是未來貝爾回到俱樂部能否還有一席之地的關鍵。
