上個賽季的老连歐冠聯賽 ，梅西C羅都無緣歐冠八強 。年无而在剛結束的缘欧的新賽季歐冠八強戰 ，梅西與C羅再次無緣歐冠八強 。冠强連續兩個賽季無緣歐冠八強，巴黎在很多媒體看來這代表著足壇絕代雙驕年代的同病落幕 。巴黎與曼聯分別簽下了暮年的相怜梅西與C羅 ，而兩支球隊也並沒有獲得想象中的梅罗曼联成功 。
C羅在2009年的老连夏天離開曼聯加盟了西甲豪門皇馬 ，而從這時開始 ，年无C羅就與在巴薩效力的缘欧梅西成為了一對死敵 ，兩人也上成為了世界足壇的冠强絕代雙驕 。從2009—2010賽季直到2017—2018賽季這9個賽季裏 ，巴黎皇馬和巴薩至少有一支球隊能進入歐冠四強 ，同病其中皇馬奪得了4次歐冠冠軍 ，巴薩奪得了兩次歐冠冠軍 。這9個賽季 ，是西甲雙雄統治歐洲足壇的9年，也是梅羅絕代雙驕最為亮眼的9年 。
但是從2018年的夏天開始 ，梅西與C羅兩人都開始走下坡路 。C羅在尤文效力三個賽季，隻是第一個賽季進入八強 ，其餘的兩個賽季連續無緣歐冠八強 。梅西在歐冠的成績也是一路下滑，上個賽季，梅西帶隊的巴薩2-5輸給巴黎 ，無緣歐冠八強 。盡管上個賽季雙雙無緣歐冠八強 ，但是在諸多球迷眼中，這隻是偶然發生的事情 ，大部分球迷都認為兩人會卷土重來 。
去年夏天 ，曼聯與巴黎分別引進了C羅與梅西 ，兩人也是備受期待 。但是兩人的發揮都沒有達到預期 ，梅西在法甲出場18次 ，打進2球 ，聯賽進球數創下職業生涯最低。C羅在英超聯賽中出場24次，打進12球 ，也遠比不上他在皇馬尤文效力時的進球數 。歐冠賽場 ，兩人在1/8淘汰賽發揮低迷，梅西在兩回合的比賽中一球未進，而且打丟一個點球 ，C羅兩場比賽也是顆粒無收 。隨著兩人狀態的走低 ，曼聯與巴黎兩隊也無緣歐冠八強 ，C羅與梅西兩人也連續第二個賽季失去了在歐冠八強征戰的機會。
C羅與梅西的時代結束了嗎 ？想必在兩人連續兩年無緣歐冠八強的時候，肯定有更多的球迷會得出這樣的結論 。而事實上，曼聯與巴黎的球迷已經開始這樣做了 。英國媒體《天空體育》給出的一項誰才是最應該離開曼聯的球員的評選中 ，C羅得到了68%的選票 。而梅西在歐冠遭到皇馬淘汰後也遭到了主場球迷漫天的噓聲 。
