北京時間7月8日 ，亚足亞足聯通過官方渠道確認 ，联确利亚练新現年58歲的认叙敘利亞人尼紮爾·馬赫魯斯被敘利亞足協正式任命為敘利亞隊新一任主教練 ，率隊參加即將於今年9月開始的队换度接队卡塔爾世預賽亞洲區12強賽 。不過 ，主教主帅對於球隊前任突尼斯籍主帥馬魯爾與敘利亞足協有關“欠薪”糾紛 ，手球亞足聯並沒有做具體解答 。亚足
亞足聯援引敘利亞足協官方渠道的联确利亚练新信息稱，“在經過對幾位候選人的认叙綜合考察後 ，我們（敘利亞足協）決定聘用馬赫魯斯擔任敘利亞隊新任主教練 。队换度接队這是主教主帅敘利亞足協國家隊管理部門綜合各方意見後作出的決定 。”
眾所周知 ，手球突尼斯籍教頭馬魯爾在率領敘利亞隊以40強賽A組頭名身份躋身12強賽後 ，亚足公開宣稱自己被敘利亞足協長期欠薪 。联确利亚练新他也表示 ，认叙自己將辭去敘利亞隊主帥職務 。不過 ，所謂“辭職”是否經過官方認證目前不得而知。而有消息顯示 ，馬魯爾已經打算借助法律手段維護自己的權益 。
亞足聯稱 ，現年58歲的馬赫魯斯已經正式接替馬魯爾 ，並將帶領敘利亞隊衝擊卡塔爾世界杯 。算上此次上任 ，馬赫魯斯先後4次執掌球隊教鞭 。
敘利亞隊在12強賽中與伊朗隊、韓國隊 、阿聯酋隊 、黎巴嫩隊、伊拉克隊同分在A組。
