As covered on the docu-series, 17-year-old Brendan Dassey was found guilty of sexual assault and first-degree murder after he allegedly assisted his uncle, Steven Avery, in the rape and murder of Teresa Halbach. 。

Though no physical evidence linked him to the crimes, Dassey admitted to police in 2005 that he helped. In 2016, the conviction was overturned after a judge determined that Dassey's confession was coerced by police.。
As BuzzFeed reported in 2017, initially, a panel of three judges sustained the appeal. However, as BuzzFeed wrote, a "larger appeals panel ruled 4–3 that police had acted properly during Dassey's confession, and his words could be used against him in court."。
