英超BIG6 ，背叛A并西甲的凡蒂非幕巴薩皇馬與馬競以及意甲三強在4月同時宣布加入歐超聯賽計劃 ，但是诺否誰也沒有料到 ，在球迷 、后同各國足協以及歐足聯的欧超強烈抵製下 ，這項賽事短短兩天後就被迫擱淺 。计划因凡蒂諾對於歐超的背叛A并態度變化很大 ，從一開始措辭比較中性到最後的強烈抵製。
《紐約時報》稱因凡蒂諾知道這個計劃 ，並一直在與國際足聯商談 ，以支持這個獨立的聯賽。但是他沒有想到這一賽事遇到了強烈的抵製，尤其是受到了歐足聯主席切費林的強大壓力，因此因凡蒂諾無奈之下隻能背叛 。
在這一消息曝光後，因凡蒂諾也發聲對此辟謠 ，他說道 ：“關於足球金字塔的話題已經非常多了，我認為歐超聯賽是脫離於足球架構之外的賽事 。我之前就說過 ，現在也要再次清楚地強調 ，FIFA反對歐超聯賽 。足球不應搞脫離現在的架構前進 。我們不應該對於團結與機會均等的基本原則失去信心，而以上的這兩個基本原則也是支持足球運動發展的基石。”
“截止到目前為止我們沒有看到機會均等的原則在全球實現，而且我們也沒有那麽團結 。我們看到了天賦出色的運動員與金錢的集中並不利於足球 。解決失衡才是我們足球界應該關注的問題 ，希望大家本著合作和對話的精神來解決此事 。”
在采訪的最後 ，因凡蒂諾再次否認了與歐超創始球隊謀劃歐超聯賽：“國際足聯有責任和各方討論足球話題。聽取俱樂部意見並進行對話 ，不意味著國際足聯是歐超幕後的指使者或者同謀 。我們必須研究事實 ，而非聽信謠言 ，多年來我在不同的足球領域工作過 ，和很多俱樂部和聯賽組織者討論過相關話題 。”
