卡納瓦羅在2014年11月首次執教廣州隊 ，执教郑智组隨後在2015年6月下課，备受其間22場比賽執教成績為11勝6平5負 。诟病卡納瓦羅後來執教過利雅得勝利和天津天海；2017年11月重執廣州隊教鞭並一直帶隊至今 ，或建其間126場比賽執教成績為79勝23平24負 。教练
2019年 ，粤媒卡納瓦羅曾短暫代理國家隊主帥，卡纳隨後以專心廣州隊事務為由而放棄了國足主帥一職。瓦罗
卡納瓦羅兩次執教廣州隊的执教郑智组勝率為61% ，率隊獲得2018年超級杯冠軍和2019年中超聯賽冠軍，备受2020賽季在亞冠和中超賽場四大皆空 。诟病這樣的或建執教成績單與卡納瓦羅千萬歐元的年薪顯然不成正比。無論是戰術變化 、人員使用還是臨場調度，他的執教能力均備受詬病 。
卡納瓦羅與廣州隊的合同原本在2022年年底到期，他原計劃於9月23日返回廣州，將本賽季的餘下8輪中超爭冠賽事打完 ，但最終仍與俱樂部提前和平分手 。
廣州隊目前最有可能由隊長兼教練的鄭智出任執行主教練，帶隊參加足協杯和剩餘的中超比賽。鄭智或會臨時組建一個教練班子 ，率隊度過困難時期 。
