據《郵報》報道 ，每個賽季前切爾西俱樂部都會和所有球員們就各項賽事的獎金達成協議 ，這是對球員們的額外激勵。不過本賽季切爾西球員們的合同中隻規定了英超 、歐冠 、足總杯 、聯賽杯的奪冠獎金 ，卻沒有世俱杯 、歐洲超級杯的奪冠獎金條款 。
在去年8月進行的歐洲超級杯中 ，切爾西通過點球大戰7-6擊敗比利亞雷亞爾後奪冠 ，俱樂部從歐足聯獲得了370萬英鎊獎金 。而在上周末的世俱杯奪冠後 ，切爾西又從國際足聯獲得了360萬英鎊的奪冠獎金。兩項冠軍共為俱樂部帶來了730萬英鎊獎金 ，但由於球員們合同中沒有對這兩項冠軍的奪冠獎金 ，因此切爾西俱樂部可以不用分錢給球員們，所有獎金都被計入俱樂部收入 。
目前切爾西在英超積分榜上落後領頭羊曼城16分 ，奪冠基本無望 。不過切爾西在歐冠和足總杯都已經晉級16強 ，此外在2月28日的英格蘭聯賽杯決賽中，切爾西將迎戰利物浦 。如果在這幾項賽事中奪冠 ，切爾西球員們依然可以獲得奪冠獎金 。
