澳大利亞廣播公司對分組形勢報道稱，日本隊是澳男足的勁敵 ，兩隊在前三屆世界杯預選賽的這一階段都分在了一組 。在過去25次交鋒中 ，澳男足贏下7場 ，但最近一次還是在2010年 ，而日本隊在最近7次交鋒中贏下4場。
根據出線規則 ，亞洲區12強賽將有4.5個世界杯正賽席位 。兩個小組的前2名直接出線 ，第三名進行附加賽 ，勝者再參加跨大洲的附加賽 ，爭取最後的世界杯名額。
