在歐冠曆史上 ，两级联赛羸弱轮仅七次贏得歐冠冠軍的分化米蘭也是僅次於皇馬的球隊 ，但是米兰紅黑軍團在最近10年卻迎來了低穀 。球隊因為財政問題沒有了豪華的陣容，而且兩次更換老板 ，球隊進入陣痛期 。
上個賽季的米蘭在意甲聯賽發揮出色 ，獲得了前四，也贏得了參加本賽季歐冠的資格。新賽季開戰後 ，米蘭在意甲賽場延續著好狀態 ，前11輪的比賽獲得了10場比賽的勝利，另外的1場比賽獲得了平局 。最終在前11輪比賽後以31個積分與那不勒斯並列位居意甲首位 。
盡管在意甲賽場非常強勢，但是紅黑軍在歐冠卻有些低迷。首輪小組賽，米蘭2-3輸給利物浦，第二輪比賽，米蘭主場1-2輸給馬競 ，而在第三輪小組賽，米蘭客場0-1輸給波爾圖 ，紅黑軍團迎來了歐冠三連敗 。
第四輪的小組賽 ，米蘭在主場對戰波爾圖，最終這支意甲豪門1-1戰平對手 ，獲得了本賽季歐冠的第一個積分 。盡管一個積分不足以改變米蘭目前在歐冠的艱難處境 ，但是對於多個賽季沒有踢歐冠的米蘭來說 ，贏得一個積分非常鼓舞士氣 ，而這也會促進米蘭踢好聯賽 。
