回溯穆裏尼奧與兩人的“恩怨” 。英國《鏡報》回憶 ，似乎三人從未意見一致過 。而且在穆裏尼奧麾下 ，姆希塔良和斯莫林也都無法發揮全部實力 。對於羅馬新賽季集訓的表現 ，穆裏尼奧還是不太滿意，“我對大家的表現並不滿意 ，我不是說個別球員，我是說大部分，三個、四個甚至更多球員 ，他們需要更多訓練來一步一步找回自己的狀態 。”
姆希塔良曾經在離開曼聯之後向媒體透露過與穆裏尼奧的關係 ，“（我與穆裏尼奧的關係）是我職業生涯最複雜的 。他天生就是贏家 ，他希望你也要贏 ，而你必須按照他的要求去做，這對任何人來說都是困難的 ，會存在分歧和衝突 。但他並沒有對我們努力工作和贏得（那個賽季）三座獎杯產生太大影響 。”
姆希塔良還舉了個例子 ，“有一次，穆裏尼奧在早餐時看到我 ，對我說‘因為你 ，媒體批評我了。’我回答‘真的麽 ，先生？我不是故意的 。’”而斯莫林也有類似的經曆 ，“為了球隊，你必須做任何事情 。他對我說‘勇敢的人 ，願意不惜一切代價參加比賽，和那些稍微痛苦就受不了的人之間存在巨大差異。’”斯莫林以此來說明，當年他受傷卻被要求堅持比賽的痛苦經曆 ，讓他備受折磨。
當然 ，穆帥來到羅馬之後的舊將其實真不少。除了上述兩人，佩德羅 、桑頓等人都是穆帥此前的舊將 。如果穆裏尼奧在羅馬想盡快進入執教狀態 ，與這些舊部如何相處 ，其實是十分關鍵的 。
