在這一屆國足結束卡塔爾世預賽征戰使命後 ，球隊如何開展新一周期工作呢 ？截止到目前，這個問題的答案尚不明確 。在此之前 ，有關現任主帥李霄鵬是否留任的問題曾引發各界關注。由於李霄鵬團隊的聘用是在球隊變更管理模式的背景下落實的 ，因此其去留的決定權實際掌握在球隊管理方，也就是由體育管理部門牽頭的“國足備戰領導工作小組”手上 。
按照慣例 ，國足每逢一項大賽征戰任務結束後 ，教練團隊都會向球隊管理方匯報帶隊工作情況 。李霄鵬團隊也需要按這樣的工作程序做匯報。而事實上 ，李霄鵬本人近期也一直等待有關方麵向他發來“工作匯報”通知。
