在2016年歐洲杯 ，威爾士殺進四強成為最大黑馬，當時貝爾在三場小組賽都取得進球 。貝爾稱 ：“我知道球門在哪 ，如果有機會的話希望我能取得進球 。進球很棒，因為進球可以讓你贏得比賽 ，但由誰進球或者由誰助攻並不重要 。國家隊的主要目標是贏得比賽，隻要我們獲勝並且從小組出線，那麽我們都會很高興 。”
貝爾接著說 ：“我會為威爾士付出100%的努力 。如果我是第一個進球的人 ，那麽太好了 。如果我不是 ，希望其他隊友可以進球。無論誰出場都有責任 ，場上的11名球員都會影響比賽 。我們齊心協力 ，我們擁有強大的團隊精神 ，我們在各方麵都會發揮這種精神 。”
威爾士在本屆歐洲杯首輪小組賽的對手是瑞士，貝爾指出 ：“我們想要贏得這場勝利 ，取得一個好的開始 。我們有想要贏球的心態 ，希望能獲得開門紅讓球隊處於有利的位置 。我們為比賽製訂了計劃 ，我們想要獲勝 ，這就是我們在出場後要做的事情 。”
