當地時間本周二 ，年度國際足聯公布了2021年度陣容的阵容23名候選人 。國際足聯並沒有用到“年度最佳陣容”的人候人入字樣 ，而是选梅衔巴选特意注明“這23位球員是得票最多的候選人” 。該投票由國際足聯和FIFPRO（國際足聯職業足球運動員協會）共同組織投票選出 。罗领
國際足聯表示，萨竟該獎項是年度唯一由球員發起 ，為球員而生的阵容全球性球員獎項 。國際足聯邀請世界範圍內的人候人入69個國家和地區的18947名職業球員 ，來投出最終的选梅衔巴选11人陣容。每位投票者需要在以門將 、罗领後衛、萨竟中場、年度前鋒這四個劃分的阵容位置中 ，各選出三名他們認為在2020-21賽季中表現最出色的人候人入球員 。
該獎項誕生於2005年 ，今年是第17次評選該獎項。在此之前 ，該候選名單一直是由55名球員組成 。而今年 ，FIFPRO第一次將名單由55人縮減至23人。
國際足聯表示 ，這份23人名單，是由得票最多的三名門將 、六名後衛、六名中場和六名前鋒組成 ，此外還有兩名得票最多的非門將球員 。而在最終的11人陣容中 ，包含一名門將 、三名後衛 、三名中場和三名前鋒 ，此外還有一名得票最高的非門將球員。
國際足聯和FIFPRO將在年度頒獎典禮中公布最終的11人陣容 ，年度頒獎典禮將在當地時間2022年1月17日周一舉行 。
