馬特烏斯話鋒一轉 ，談到德意誌戰車的點球，“毫無疑問，如果打到點球決戰 ，那麽英格蘭肯定贏不了德國 。如果英格蘭真的想贏 ，必須在120分鍾內解決戰鬥 。德國的點球能力很出眾 ，你看看過去三四十年發生的事情 ，就明白我說得對不對 。如果真到了踢點球決戰 ，英格蘭將背負著巨大的壓力。”
馬特烏斯這番話不假 ，點球大戰對於英格蘭猶如夢魘 。1990年世界杯半決賽和1996年歐洲杯半決賽 ，德國皆是通過點球大戰擊敗英格蘭，其中馬特烏斯參加了意大利之夏的那場比賽 。此後 ，英格蘭又在2004年歐洲杯1/4決賽和2006年世界杯1/4決賽 ，先後以點球大戰輸給了葡萄牙 ，又在2012年歐洲杯1/4決賽以點球大戰輸給了意大利。這些年 ，英格蘭隻是在1996年歐洲杯上，點球大戰贏了西班牙而已 。
