古內斯教練還談到了2002年世界杯 ，那屆世界杯他作為主帥帶領土耳其出人意料地獲得了世界杯第三名 。“我們的國際大賽之旅真正開始就是從2002年世界杯半決賽 。每個人都想贏 ，但我相信我們會從這場比賽中學習 。”
意大利主帥曼奇尼過去曾執教土超球隊加拉塔薩雷，因此了解土耳其足球 。對此古內斯教練表示 ：“我們知道意大利的優點 ，但也知道他們的弱點 。我們非常了解意大利足球的聲望和傳統，他們幾乎獲得了每屆大賽的參賽資格 。盡管如此 ，這將是一場艱苦的比賽 ，從技術 、戰術 、身體等各個方麵來說都是如此 。我期待看到我的球員們的表現 。”
