Hello again from our 2018 summer movie preview. Here's what to see to get pumped up, blissed out, or freaked out. Today: What to watch with the kids.
There's no phrase more delicious than "summer vacation" – at least, if you're a kid. If you're someone in charge of that kid, those are words to strike fear into your heart. After all, if the young ones aren't in school all day, that means you'vegotta figure out what to do with them.
Or, you know. You could just leave it to us.
SEE ALSO:A DIY dad made a Star Wars highchair for his son, and we're wondering if it comes in adult sizesWe've done the work of scouring the calendar to come up with five movies that actuallylook like fun for the whole family, and not just for the members of the family too young to have any taste. Here's what to see if you're spending your summer watching the kids...
Okay, we're starting with a cheat. Tullyis decidedly not for kids – it's rated R – but if you're someone who haskids, you might wanna spend your free night watching it anyway. Writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman tell the story of a beleaguered mom (Charlize Theron) who hires a night nanny (Mackenzie Davis) and gets real about the exhausting, frustrating, and often thankless grind of that glorious journey known as parenthood.
Sick of the slick CG gloss of mainstream American animation? Eager to expand your kids' cinematic palette beyond Disney and Illumination? Try Lu Over the Wall. The playful fable from Japanese animator Masaaki Yuasa centers on a young mermaid who befriends a middle-school rock musician, with spectacularly surreal results. (And it's been dubbed over in English for its release here, so no need to worry if your little ones are too little for subtitles.)
In the world of the Incredibles, no time has passed at all between the first film and the sequel – not even baby Jack-Jack looks older than he did in the last movie. In the real world, though, it's been 14 years. Long enough that a kid born the same time Jack-Jack could go to a PG-13 movie all alone now. Yikes.
Your kid might eventually grow to love pop culture you hate. In fact, they probably will, since old people hating young people music is a time-honored tradition. That doesn't mean you can't try to convince them to love the same stuff you do. Like Yellow Submarine, which is old enough that your own parents might have passed it on to you. It's headed for a re-release this summer – round up your children, your parents, and their parents for a truly all-ages experience.
Once again, the summer movie season is all about superheroes. Heck, we've got another superhero movie recommendation on this very list. But if your kids are on the younger side, your best bet may be Teen Titans GO! To the Movies, which seems to hit the sweet spot between clever enough for adults and silly enough for children.
All week, we'll be running our 2018 summer movie preview. Come back every day to find out what towatch if...
Monday:... you're ready for some actionTuesday:... you wanna feel all warm and fuzzy insideWednesday:... you're in a dark and twisted moodThursday:... you're taking care of kidsFriday:... you only have time for five films this summer
