據《天空體育》報道 ，再强阿森納最初提出以4000萬英鎊的化防價格收購英格蘭後衛本懷特 ，但被布萊頓拒絕，阿森俱樂部方麵為他標價5000萬鎊 ，纳万靜待搶購 ，狮国帅誓守否則留隊也是脚塔極好的 。
本懷特在2019-20賽季被租借到利茲聯 ，再强本賽季回歸後為布萊頓出場 36 次 ，化防最終球隊在英超聯賽中排名第16位 ，阿森領先降級區13分成功保級 ，纳万這讓他給球迷留下很深刻的狮国帅誓守印象 ，稱他是布萊頓 2020-21 賽季的中流砥柱 。
本懷特在 5 月份首次入選英格蘭國家隊 ，當時他入選了索斯蓋特選的 2020 年歐洲杯臨時 33 人陣容 。但是在6月1日英格蘭主帥在臨時陣容中裁掉了7名球員 ，本懷特就是其中之一 ，不過後來他又代替了因傷退出的阿諾德 ，重新回到了三獅軍團陣中 。
阿森納在英超聯賽中排名第八 ，並且自1994-95賽季以來首次無緣歐戰 ，他們希望加強自己的防守 。
《天空體育》的Nick 表示：“阿森納上賽季的防守記錄在英超聯賽中排名第三，在他們的 38 場比賽中僅丟了 39 個球 ，但他們對本懷特和謝菲爾德聯隊門將拉姆斯代爾的興趣表明 ，阿爾特塔將防守改善視為今年夏天的首要任務 。本懷特的控球能力和年齡是阿森納對他感興趣的重要原因 。”
