索斯蓋特也談到了可能存在的點球大戰。而在英格蘭的大賽史上 ，隻有1996年本土歐洲杯的1/4決賽 ，英格蘭曾經點球淘汰了西班牙 ，此外的點球大戰無一例外全部以失敗告終 。“我們總是在討論過去的紀錄和表現 。那都是以前的時代 ，現在這支球隊已經完全不一樣了。過去四年 ，球隊又不斷成長 ，已經是一個真正意義上的團隊 。”
索斯蓋特當年曾經代表英格蘭參加了1996年歐洲杯 ，並在半決賽對陣德國時，罰丟了關鍵的點球。作為當年的見證者和參與者 ，以及如今的英格蘭主帥 ，索斯蓋特願意向隊員分享了當時自己的狀態和心理 。“我不可能將過去的事情抹去，我也不可能永遠活在那一刻。好吧 ，現在我有機會做點什麽 ，我會和球隊一起努力 。當然 ，我也不會說，我的所作所為可以讓隊員們完全治愈來自12碼的恐懼，但我會努力的 。而且 ，我相信我的隊員完全不懼怕任何的戰鬥 。”
