現年33歲的教练馬塔出自皇馬青訓 ，是工作一名攻擊型中場 。之後他曾效力過瓦倫西亞、若马切爾西等球隊 ，塔今同到退役提供2014年加盟曼聯，夏合至今已經為曼聯效力八年時間 。期后馬塔在曼聯獲得過歐聯杯 、曼联足總杯 、愿意聯賽杯 、教练社區盾杯等冠軍 ，共代表球隊出場277場 ，打進51球助攻47次 。
不過隨著年齡增長，馬塔在曼聯的出場機會減少 ，本賽季他在各項賽事中隻為曼聯出場4次 ，本輪英超也依然沒有獲得出場機會 。馬塔和曼聯的合同在今年夏天到期 ，雙方仍未續約 。此前一些來自意甲 、西甲的俱樂部有意免簽馬塔，但馬塔目前的周薪高達17萬英鎊 ，需要大幅降薪才能加盟新球隊。
目前馬塔已經開始學習教練課程 ，《太陽報》透露，如果馬塔選擇在今夏合同到期後退役 ，曼聯俱樂部願意為他提供一份教練工作 。曼聯內部的消息人士透露 ：“馬塔未來可以繼續為曼聯做出真正的貢獻 。他總是樂於幫助年輕球員 ，給管理層留下了深刻的印象 。有一種感覺 ，馬塔有朝一日可以像阿爾特塔那樣 ，從事教練或管理工作 。”
