北京時間10月8日 ，日本世預賽12強賽第3輪，队长日本隊由於柴崎嶽送烏龍助攻，赛后视险0-1不敵沙特阿拉伯 。遭沙族歧肢体賽後 ，特球日本國家隊的迷种後衛兼隊長吉田麻也接受場邊采訪時遭到沙特球迷瘋狂嘲諷，上前理論時還與對方發生衝突 ，发生隨後憤然離場 。冲突
從現場的日本視頻來看 ，當時吉田麻也正在接受現場采訪 ，队长但是赛后视险站在他對麵的沙特球迷非常不尊重 ，一直在嘲笑和不停發出噓聲 。遭沙族歧肢体憤怒的特球吉田麻也直接朝著對麵的觀眾走了過去，反而激起了現場更大的迷种噓聲 。工作人員趕忙上前勸阻 ，发生還被吉田麻也狠狠甩開了 。
比賽結束回到酒店後 ，吉田麻也接受了超過20分鍾的媒體采訪 ，與現場不同 ，“他用非常冷靜的表情和真誠地話語回答著棘手的問題” 。但是日本隊會提交書麵意見 ，因為球迷的種族歧視讓他們非常憤怒 。“日本”阿拉伯語官推更是用阿拉伯語發文 ，譴責當地球迷的行為：“日本國家隊隊長吉田麻也說，他在準備賽後采訪時遭到了一些球迷的種族主義手勢 ，他無法忍受 ，這導致了他用同樣憤怒的方式回敬球迷 。”
在接受本國電視台采訪時 ，吉田麻也拒絕透露他所遭遇到的辱罵 ，但是表示 ：“這很難接受，這在世預賽40強賽當中也遇到過 ，非常令人沮喪 。”
到目前為止 ，沙特方麵還沒有任何道歉 。
