從現場的日本視頻來看，當時吉田麻也正在接受現場采訪 ，队长但是赛后视险站在他對麵的沙特球迷非常不尊重 ，一直在嘲笑和不停發出噓聲 。遭沙族歧肢体憤怒的特球吉田麻也直接朝著對麵的觀眾走了過去 ，反而激起了現場更大的迷种噓聲 。工作人員趕忙上前勸阻 ，发生還被吉田麻也狠狠甩開了 。
比賽結束回到酒店後 ，吉田麻也接受了超過20分鍾的媒體采訪 ，與現場不同 ，“他用非常冷靜的表情和真誠地話語回答著棘手的問題” 。但是日本隊會提交書麵意見 ，因為球迷的種族歧視讓他們非常憤怒 。“日本”阿拉伯語官推更是用阿拉伯語發文 ，譴責當地球迷的行為 ：“日本國家隊隊長吉田麻也說 ，他在準備賽後采訪時遭到了一些球迷的種族主義手勢 ，他無法忍受，這導致了他用同樣憤怒的方式回敬球迷 。”
在接受本國電視台采訪時 ，吉田麻也拒絕透露他所遭遇到的辱罵 ，但是表示 ：“這很難接受，這在世預賽40強賽當中也遇到過 ，非常令人沮喪。”
