澳大利亞男足國家隊主教練阿諾德28日公布了參加9月兩場世預賽12強賽的27人名單 ，其中僅一人來自澳超聯賽 ，帅期赛强势开实力絕大部分球員在海外聯賽效力 ，待强的澳中超上海海港的局部中場球員亞倫·穆伊入選 。
澳足協介紹 ，超球澳男足未來兩天將在卡塔爾多哈集結 ，入选參加9月與中國隊和越南隊的澳主12強賽 。其中 ，帅期赛强势开实力來自悉尼FC的待强的澳邊衛瑞恩·格蘭特是唯一來自澳超聯賽的球員 ，其餘26人大多來自歐洲和亞洲的局部聯賽 。
阿諾德表示 ，超球因澳出入境和隔離防疫規定影響 ，入选以及一些個人因素，澳主部分有實力的帅期赛强势开实力澳超球員未能入選 ，但他征召的待强的澳以海外聯賽球員為主的國腳們 ，有足夠實力在12強賽上取得“強勢開局” 。

一天前，澳男足隊長馬修·萊基表示 ，在新賽季剛從德甲柏林赫塔轉會澳超墨爾本城後 ，他無法接受未來三個月每個月都需在出國參賽返澳後隔離14天 ，因此決定暫時退出9月的12強賽 。另外一名澳超球員 、射手傑米·麥克拉倫此次也沒有入選。
澳足協此前表示 ，9月2日澳男足對陣中國隊的比賽因疫情影響改在多哈舉行 ，澳足協仍在努力溝通 ，希望將10月和11月的兩個主場比賽安排在澳大利亞舉行 。盡管比賽地調整帶來一些困難 ，但澳男足目標很明確 ，就是從12強賽突圍 ，連續第五次晉級世界杯決賽圈 。
