澳大利亞男足國家隊主教練阿諾德28日公布了參加9月兩場世預賽12強賽的27人名單 ，其中僅一人來自澳超聯賽 ，帅期赛强势开实力絕大部分球員在海外聯賽效力，待强的澳中超上海海港的局部中場球員亞倫·穆伊入選 。
澳足協介紹 ，超球澳男足未來兩天將在卡塔爾多哈集結 ，入选參加9月與中國隊和越南隊的澳主12強賽 。其中，帅期赛强势开实力來自悉尼FC的待强的澳邊衛瑞恩·格蘭特是唯一來自澳超聯賽的球員 ，其餘26人大多來自歐洲和亞洲的局部聯賽 。
阿諾德表示，超球因澳出入境和隔離防疫規定影響 ，入选以及一些個人因素 ，澳主部分有實力的帅期赛强势开实力澳超球員未能入選 ，但他征召的待强的澳以海外聯賽球員為主的國腳們 ，有足夠實力在12強賽上取得“強勢開局” 。
“在每一個位置上 ，我們至少有兩名球員 ，這能帶來戰術靈活性，而且許多球員都是在俱樂部狀態良好的情況下被征召的。”他說 。
這位同時兼任執教澳國奧隊、率隊參加了東京奧運會的主帥表示 ，他此次還讓一些老將回歸 ，包括蘇超凱爾特人的攻擊型中場湯姆·羅吉奇、上海海港隊的穆伊 、英格蘭桑德蘭俱樂部的後衛貝利·賴特等 。
此前在40強賽上登場的球員 ，包括頭球得分能力強的高中衛哈裏·蘇塔 、後衛米洛斯·德格內克 、前中超球員特倫特·塞恩斯伯裏、中場傑克遜·歐文、邊路球員阿齊茲·貝希奇以及邊鋒馬丁·博伊爾等悉數入選 。
一天前 ，澳男足隊長馬修·萊基表示 ，在新賽季剛從德甲柏林赫塔轉會澳超墨爾本城後，他無法接受未來三個月每個月都需在出國參賽返澳後隔離14天 ，因此決定暫時退出9月的12強賽 。另外一名澳超球員 、射手傑米·麥克拉倫此次也沒有入選 。
澳足協此前表示 ，9月2日澳男足對陣中國隊的比賽因疫情影響改在多哈舉行 ，澳足協仍在努力溝通 ，希望將10月和11月的兩個主場比賽安排在澳大利亞舉行。盡管比賽地調整帶來一些困難 ，但澳男足目標很明確 ，就是從12強賽突圍 ，連續第五次晉級世界杯決賽圈 。
