目前曼城在英超積分榜上以9分優勢領跑 ，瓜迪排名第二的奥拉利物浦主帥克洛普表示沒有機會追上曼城 。但曼城主帥瓜迪奧拉並未大意輕敵 ，不信他告誡球員們足球界一切皆有可能 ，克洛必須拿到96分才能確保奪冠 。放弃
此前曼城取得12連勝 ，拿分而利物浦和切爾西在聖誕賽程期間都相繼丟分 ，确保不少人認為本賽季的夺冠英超冠軍爭奪已經提前失去懸念。但在薩拉赫和馬內等主力參加非洲杯期間 ，瓜迪利物浦卻獲得英超聯賽三連勝，奥拉縮小了和曼城的不信差距 。盡管曼城還領先利物浦9分 ，克洛但利物浦少賽一場 ，放弃而且在今年4月兩隊還有一場直接交鋒 ，拿分如果曼城稍有大意，确保利物浦就有可能把差距縮小到3分 。
在上一輪英超利物浦2-0戰勝萊斯特城後 ，利物浦主帥克洛普表示 ：“我不認為我們能讓曼城感到警惕 ，他們不會覺得利物浦已經快要追上來了 。我們沒有機會趕超曼城 ，但這並不意味著我們不會嚐試讓自己踢出最好的賽季，我們要做的隻是試圖去贏得每一場比賽 。”
不過曼城主帥瓜迪奧拉並沒有因為克洛普的這番言論而大意 ，瓜迪奧拉首先明確表示：“我不相信他說的話 ！”接著瓜帥表示 ：“如果是我在那個位置 ，我絕不會放棄，克洛普同樣如此 ，否則他就不會成為現在的他 。他當然還相信有機會 ，在足球界一切皆有可能 。他知道他們必須贏得很多比賽 ，就像我們知道自己必須贏得很多比賽才能衛冕英超冠軍一樣。”
利物浦還有15輪英超聯賽，如果他們取得全勝積分將達到96分 ，瓜迪奧拉提醒曼城球員們必須超過這個分數才能確保奪冠。“我們的對手利物浦還在身後追趕 ，現在我們之間的積分差距不算什麽 ，我們必須贏得更多比賽 ，隻有拿到96分才能確保冠軍 。多年來兩支球隊都證明了自己可以連續取得令人難以置信的勝利 ，我們雙方都可以連續取得16 、7場勝利 ，他們可以做到，我們也可以做到 。”
在本周末的英超聯賽 ，曼城將在客場挑戰諾維奇 ，瓜迪奧拉表示 ：“我還記得我們曾在這個客場輸過球 ，當時諾維奇拿出了現象級的表現 。最近諾維奇的表現同樣非常出色 ，我們遇到了一個狀態正佳的對手。到客場比賽必須盡可能忽略場外因素 ，把注意力集中到比賽上 ，曼城球員們都經曆過歐冠這樣的重大比賽 ，因此我們不會對客場的氣氛感到特別吃驚。”
