當地時間1月5日，年度國際足聯官網公布了2021年度最佳男足門將的最佳最終三名候選人 ，多納魯馬 、人候仁切門迪 、选巴諾伊爾入圍 。黎拜同時國際足聯還公布了2021年度最佳女足門將的尔西三名候選人 。
此前國際足聯曾公布一份最佳男足門將的年度五人候選名單 ，而此次利物浦門將阿利森和萊斯特城門將小舒梅切爾落選。最佳最終入圍的人候仁切三名候選人分別是 ：效力於AC米蘭/巴黎聖日耳曼的意大利門將多納魯馬 、效力於切爾西的选巴塞內加爾門將門迪 、效力於拜仁的黎拜德國門將諾伊爾 。22歲的尔西多納魯馬在2021年幫助意大利奪得歐洲杯冠軍，29歲的年度門迪在2021年隨切爾西獲得歐冠冠軍 ，而35歲的最佳諾伊爾則隨拜仁獲得上賽季德甲冠軍。
年度最佳男足門將由國際足聯旗下所有男足國家隊現任主帥 、人候仁切現任隊長 、以及各國足協所在地區的一名專業記者 、還有在國際足聯官網注冊的球迷代表等人共同評選產生 。最終的獲獎者將在1月17日通過網絡出席國際足聯的年度頒獎典禮 。
同時國際足聯還公布了2021年度最佳女足門將的三名候選人 ，她們分別是 ：在切爾西效力的德國女足門將貝爾格 、在巴黎聖日耳曼/裏昂效力的智利門將恩德勒 、在洛森格德/巴黎聖日耳曼效力的加拿大門將拉貝 。
此前國際足聯已經公布了2021年度最佳進球（普斯卡什獎）的三位候選人：希克 、拉梅拉、塔雷米 。在當地時間1月6日 ，國際足聯還將公布2021年度最佳男足主帥和最佳女足主帥的候選人 ，而在1月7日公布2021年度最佳男足球員和最佳女足球員的候選人 。
