尼日利亞在世界杯預選賽非洲區第三階段的支男足解比賽中 ，首回合客場0-0戰平加納，个教次回合主場1-1戰平對手 ，练组最終因為客場進球劣勢被淘汰 ，无缘無緣進軍卡塔爾世界杯的世界散整決賽圈 。次回合戰後 ，杯后球場內還爆發了大規模的第天衝突事件，FIFA指定的支男足解醫務官員甚至當場死亡。
這一事件發生一天後 ，个教尼日利亞足協官方宣布 ，练组球隊主帥奧古斯丁-埃瓜文立即卸任 。无缘同時 ，足協也同步終結了整個教練組 ，以及整個技術團隊的工作 。秘書長默罕默德-薩努西表示 ：“感謝教練團隊和技術團隊的工作人員為國家服務，並祝願他們未來一切都好 。”
