此前西班牙媒體曾指出 ，巴萨巴薩為梅西開出的谈妥天续是一份10年合同 。梅西先以球員身份為巴薩效力兩年 ，合同或生然後去邁阿密國際踢兩年退役。日当在離開巴薩之後 ，西媒梅西會以形象大使的梅西身份再為巴薩“效力”八年。在未來兩年中 ，巴萨梅西將會接受降薪 。而在離開巴薩之後 ，他會繼續以形象大使的角色從巴薩領工資 。說的直白點 ，巴薩是把應該兩年內付給梅西的薪水 ，攤到了十年內向其支付。如此一來 ，梅西並沒有經濟損失 ，巴薩未來幾年間的薪資壓力也沒那麽大 。
《阿斯報》如今指出 ，梅西未來兩年的合同不是固定的 ，而是1+1式 。在續約一年之後 ，梅西會在明年夏天再與巴薩續約一年 。這樣操作的目的 ，是為了降低巴薩的工資總額 ，以盡可能幫助紅藍軍團減少疫情期間的薪資壓力 。還有媒體表示 ，梅西很可能會在6月24日34歲生日當天，與巴薩正式完成續約 。
不過《每日體育報》卻指出 ，梅西還沒有和巴薩徹底談妥續約 。雙方雖然接近於達成一致 ，但目前還沒有到板上釘釘的程度。這也就意味著，梅西的未來仍然還不確定 ，他仍然還有可能做出任何選擇。
