據美聯社報道 ，蘇富比拍賣行自4月20日開始線上拍賣這件球衣 ，在成交後沒有透露買家姓名。
據法新社報道 ，馬拉多納的女兒質疑拍賣的球衣為馬拉多納在上半場比賽中穿的另一件球衣 。蘇富比拍賣行利用照片比對技術甄別球衣上的徽章 、條紋和編號等“不同元素的獨特細節”後 ，認定這件拍品就是馬拉多納兩次進球時所穿球衣 。
蘇富比拍賣行街頭服飾與現代收藏品部門負責人布拉姆·瓦赫特說 ：“這件具有曆史意義的球衣不僅是體育史上一個重要時刻的有形提醒物 ，對20世紀曆史而言也是如此 。”
這件球衣的成交創下迄今體育紀念品拍賣價格最高紀錄 。
此前拍價最高的體育紀念品是2019年成交的現代奧林匹克之父皮埃爾·顧拜旦1892年撰寫的《奧林匹克宣言》手稿原件，拍價為880萬美元 。美國棒球傳奇巨星貝比·魯斯生前穿過的一件紐約揚基隊球衣2019年以約564萬美元拍出 ，是此前拍價最高的球衣 。
馬拉多納1960年10月30日出生於阿根廷首都布宜諾斯艾利斯 ，他通過足球改變命運 ，成為世界足壇傳奇 。2020年11月25日，馬拉多納因急性心力衰竭去世 ，終年60歲 。
