比利時是时足斯也世界排名第一的球隊 ，也是协主席留本屆歐洲杯的奪冠熱門。在小組賽 ，任马比利時發揮出色 ，丁内順利以小組第一出線 。辞职而在隨後對戰葡萄牙的比利不觉比賽中 ，比利時憑借著小阿紮爾的时足斯也進球擊敗了葡萄牙晉級八強 。但是协主席留1/4淘汰賽麵對意大利卻輸給了對手。
止步歐洲杯八強的成績並不令人滿意 ，因此賽後也曝出了馬丁內斯將會下課的消息 。但比利時足協主席博薩爾特在接受采訪時卻表示 ，馬丁內斯不會離開 ：“我們將會開始為9月以及10月份的國家隊比賽做準備 ，馬丁內斯會繼續留在國家隊 。我們沒有必要更換主帥 ，而且我也不認為他會主動辭職 ，馬丁內斯留隊沒有任何問題 。我對馬丁內斯充滿了信心，球隊出局不能責怪球隊 、主帥 、球員以及教練團隊 ，賽後分析總是非常簡單 ，而困難是賽前與比賽時保持專注 。除非馬丁內斯另有其它決定 ，否則的話他會留在這裏 ，因為他和足協的合同世界杯之後才到期 。”
隨後博薩爾特也談起了比利時隊的一係列問題：“是否是失敗的一屆歐洲杯？球隊成績令人失望 ，因此可以稱之為失敗 ，我完全理解大家的想法 。是否是比利時黃金一代球員最後的奪冠機會 ？我對此事感到樂觀 ，雖然我們在本屆歐洲杯失去了奪冠的機會，但是10月份歐洲國家聯賽將要開啟 ，16個月後我們將迎來世界杯 。我們的很多頂級球員依然相當年輕 ，德布勞內和阿紮爾30歲 ，盧卡庫28歲 ，卡拉斯科27歲 ，蒂萊曼斯24歲 ，這批球員還能踢很長時間 ，這一代球員依然有奪冠機會。”
