直到2015年 ，食年老穆勒的病情首次被公開 ，並住進了療養醫院 ，他的家人以及海因克斯等朋友經常去看望他。今年5月，拜仁前鋒萊萬打破了老穆勒單賽季德甲40球的紀錄 ，當時妻子曾前往療養醫院看望他 ，並告知了這一消息 ，但她重複多遍並沒有得到回應 ，老穆勒仍然處於人事不省的狀態 。
在老穆勒生命的最後15天 ，他已經無法進食 。《圖片報》指出 ，老穆勒飽受了多年病痛折磨，“這名德國最偉大的前鋒終於可以解脫了 。”
