在歐洲杯這樣的大賽 ，除非是非常明顯的犯規 ，否則裁判萬萬沒有勇氣吹罰點球 ，更何況這還是揭幕戰。因此 ，馬克列這一次沒有判罰點球 ，客觀說來其實也並非誤判 。不過 ，接下來的這次判罰 ，就讓人有些看不懂了 。當時 ，比賽進行到第43分鍾 ，場上比分依舊為0-0 ，意大利發動攻勢 ，斯皮納佐拉禁區左側傳中時，皮球打在了切利克的手臂上，藍衫軍團球員再度瘋狂投訴 ，當值主裁依舊並未理會 。隨後 ，VAR介入認定不是點球 。
值得一提的是 ，本場比賽的主裁判是來自於荷蘭的馬克列 。在過去的一個賽季中 ，這名裁判多次吹罰焦點賽事 ，其中包括皇馬對陣切爾西的歐冠半決賽 。不過 ，馬克列給人們留下深刻印象的卻是他的一次爭議判罰 ，即葡萄牙與塞爾維亞的比賽 。那是在世預賽歐洲區小組賽第二輪的一場比賽中 ，葡萄牙客場2-2憾平塞爾維亞 ，C羅曾在終場傷停補時階段完成絕殺 ，但最終卻不幸遭遇門線冤案 ，當值主裁馬克列吹掉了尤文球星的壓哨進球 。
